NEW YORK HOW TO KEEP THE PARISH REGISTER The PARISH REGISTER contains the vital records of the Parish, and is legal evidence as to births, baptisms, com/irmations, marriages, and burials. It is also a record of the number of Baptized Persons and the number of Communicants belonging to the Parish. It is to be examined by the Bishop at his annual visitation. The records should be entered izamediately upon performance of any officer, by the minister himself. The Marriage Record should invariably be signed by each of those parties specified in the Canon. All permanent entries should be recorded in black ink. Temporary memoranda as to Communi- cants—as “can’t find,” “ceased to communicate,” etc.--if made, should be in pencil as easy to erase and not proper as matter of permanent record. No name should ever be erased or scratched. Every name, once entered, must be accounted for in the Register. Where communicants are transferred to another Parish, enter “transferred to A. B.,” with date. If Letter of Transfer is not issued, enter “removed to A. B.” It is wise, in such instances, to apprise the Rector of the parish into which such parties have moved. A distinction should be made between BAPTISMS and BAPTIZED PERSONS. The section for BAPTISMS should be used only for recording the information concerning anyone whose Baptism has been performed in the Parish. The section for BAPTIZED PERSONS should be used for recording the names of persons Baptized elsewhere, in addition to the names of those persons Baptized in the Parish. See the section for BAPTIZED PERSONS for further details about the use of that section. A new name entered on any page should also be entered in an Index. Oho cok fiat 1986 | Noxth Carslino 1936 | Baten De, 12. 5 BAPTIZED PERSONS The Canons of the Church, in the Canon entitled “Of Regulations Respecting the Laity,” define membership in the Church as follows: “All persons who have received the sacrament of Holy Baptism with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, and whose baptism has beer: recorded in this Church, are members thereof.” It is therefore encumbent upon Parishes to record the names of all Baptized Persons belonging to the Parish, in addition to the record of those persons who have been Baptized in th: ‘'arish. Hence this record of BAPTIZED PERSONS. Herein should be recorded the names of all persons who have becn Bar tized in the Parish and also the names of those persons who have been received into the Parish (but who have not yet been Confirmed) whose Baptism has been performed in some other Episcopal Church, in a Church of another branch of the Anglican Communion, in the Roman Catholic Church, in an Orthodox Church, or in one of the denominational Churches, provided the Baptism has been with water in the name of the Trinity. As soon as a Baptized Person is Confirmed, the name should be removed from this Record of Baptized Persons by placing an “R” in the second column of the record, and also by noting the Confirmation in the “Removed” column. The name of this person will also automatically be added to the list of Communicants. The same procedure should be followed when a Baptized Person (who has not yet been Confirmed) is transferred to another Parish, or is dropped from the Parish rolls for any reason, or is removed because of death. In order to obtain the number of Baptized Persons belonging to a Parish, for the Annual Parochial Report, it will readily be possible to count the number of Baptized Persons listed herein and add that to the number of Communicants, to get the total number of Baptized Persons belonging to the Parish.
