REGULAR MINUTES
January 2, 2018
The Iredell County Board of Commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday, January
2, 2018 at 7:00 PM, in the Iredell County Government Center (Commissioners’ Meeting Room),
200 South Center Street, Statesville, NC.

CALL TO ORDER by Chairman Mallory.
INVOCATION: Chairman James Mallory asked everyone to bow their heads for a
moment of silence.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Led by Chairman Mallory.
ADJUSTMENTS TO THE AGENDA
County Manager Ron Smith made the following adjustment:
Add: Appointments to Boards and Commissions – Reappointment of Commissioners on
various committees.
MOTION by Commissioner Houpe to adopt the agenda as presented.
VOTING: Ayes – 5; Nays – 0

Request from the Clerk to the Board for approval of minutes from the meeting on
December 19, 2017: There were no comments or corrections to the minutes.
MOTION by Commissioner McNeely to approve the minutes.

APPOINTMENTS TO BOARD AND COMMISSIONS
Request from Planning and Development to extend Tom Gregory’s term on the
Zoning Board of Adjustment until Case #171116-4 has concluded:
MOTION by Commissioner McNeely to approve this extension.
VOTING: Ayes – 5; Nays – 0
Reappointment of Commissioners on various committees and task forces : Chairman
Mallory asked if it was the consensus of the Board to maintain the same assignments as the
previous year.
MOTION by Commissioner Houpe to approve the current assignments.

COUNTY MANAGER’S REPORT
County Manager Ron Smith said he had nothing to report at his last meeting with this
Board.
PRESENTATION OF SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS & AWARDS
Chairman Mallory explained that County Manager Ron Smith had accepted a position with
the Centralina Council of Governments and his last day as Iredell County Manager will be Friday,
January 4, 2018. Mallory summarized Smith’s employment history of 17 years with Iredell
County.
Each Board member took a moment to express their sincere thanks and appreciation for
Smith’s management/leadership, boldness, support, cooperation, dedication, service, reputation,
mentoring, morals, and hard work. Appreciation was also extended to Smith’s wife and family.
Each Board member wished Smith well in his future endeavors.
Chairman Mallory summarized Smith’s history as County Manager and mentioned a few
specific projects, initiatives, and accomplishments, such as the demolition of the old Davis
Hospital, leading the way in the valuation, design and construction of the jail and public safety
buildings, assisting in implementing a strategic plan, unity of the economic development teams,
endless work with the education boards and workforce development and also assisting public
health with a multidiscipline approach to address the opioid epidemic. Mallory expressed
appreciation to Smith for his energy, dedication, and for engaging a competent administrative
group that will continue to lead the day to day operations without interruption.

Chairman Mallory gave a shout out to Project Manager David Saleeby for overseeing the
building projects of the jail and public safety complex.
Smith was humbled by all the kind words and expressed his sincere appreciation to the
Board and staff for leadership and guidance. He feels the County is currently in a good place and
is moving in a great direction for growth. Smith said his new position will be regional which will
allow for continued support of Iredell County. Holding the post of County Manager has been an
honor and meaningful. This Board and this staff is all part of history and he is proud to have been
a part of it. Many things have been accomplished and many things are in progress ready to move
to the next phase but staff is very capable of carrying on.
